Strawberry Smoothie With Greek Yogurt

This smoothie is as healthy as they get. Strawberries are full of vitamins and have a low glycemic index (at least for fruit). In fact their GI is only 40. This means that they do not cause your blood sugar to spike. This is of course important information for diabetics, but also helps the rest of us. Keeping our blood sugar levels fairly even keeps cravings and overeating at bay.

Add to this some low or non-fat Greek yogurt and you are creating a nutritional powerhouse that’s great for weightloss. Greek yogurt is thicker than its more common cousin, giving this smoothie a delicious creamy consistency. It also has about twice as much protein as regular yogurt which is important in any diet since protein keeps you full longer and helps you keep muscle mass. The combination makes this strawberry smoothie with Greek yogurt a perfect breakfast or lunch when you are trying to shed a few extra pounds.

Strawberry Smoothie With Greek Yogurt Recipe

  • 8 to 10 Strawberries
  • 1/2 cup of non-fat Greek Yogurt (I like vanilla)
  • 1 cup of ice
  • Water

Put everything into a blender. Start with about a half a cup of water and add more if the smoothie is too thick. If you don’t like your smoothies frozen, you may omit the ice. You can also use frozen strawberries in which case the ice is also not needed.

This healthy smoothie is great with plain, vanilla or strawberry non-fat Greek yogurt.

If you can’t find Greek yogurt, you can take regular low or non-fat yogurt and strain it overnight in a cheese cloth. To do this get out a bowl and a strainer that fits on top of the bowl. Line the strainer with cheese cloth and pour your yogurt in it. Cover everything with a plate and store in the fridge overnight. In the morning you will notice some milky liquid in the bowl and the remaining yogurt will have thickened into Greek-Style yogurt.
