Oven-Fried Apples

  • 4 cups sliced apples

  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons reduced-calorie pancake syrup
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons margarine or butter

Cut the apples away from the core into thin slices.  I don't peel the apples, but you could if the peels were particularly unattractive.  Arrange the apples in an 8-inch square pan. Sprinkle on the cinnamon, nutmeg, syrup and lemon juice. Toss or stir the apples to coat them evenly with the spices and syrup.  Dot the top of the apples with margarine or butter. Bake at 350° for about 30 minutes.  If you prefer your apples to steam a little then cover the pan with tin foil before baking. I prefer mine to bake uncovered. Serve hot with breakfast, lunch or as a dessert. These are an old southern favorite. They are cheap, good and no one will know that they are diet food.

VARIATION
If desired you may replace the margarine or butter with 2-tablespoons of prepared liquid Butter Buds.  Drizzle it over the apples before baking.
