Homemade Non-Stick Spray

  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil, any kind

  • 2 tablespoons liquid lethicin (optional; see recipe)
  • a spray bottle from Walmart (see recipe)

Combine the vegetable oil and lethicin in the spray bottle and use just like the commercial stuff.  Works flawlessly.

Vegetable Oil:  I like to use Canola oil, but you could use any type you liked.  Olive oil, Soybean oil, Peanut oil; Corn oil; even an interesting Butter flavored oil you can some times find in large grocery stores; use your favorite type.

Liquid Lecithin:  This is available at health food stores, usually in 16-ounce bottles.  You can also find it online at Barry Farm.  It costs less than $5 a bottle, and one bottle will last 2 or 3 years.  Store the bottle in the fridge for longest keeping qualities.  Lecithin is a soy product.  It is the secret ingredient in the non-stick sprays that you buy from the grocery store.

Spray Bottle:  I bought mine from Wal-Mart for about $4.  The brand name is Oil-O-Pump.  It is environmentally safer than spray cans because it doesn't hurt the ozone layer the way aresol cans do.  I have seen other pump-spray bottle for as much as $15 to $30.  Be sure you shop around to find the cheapest before you actually purchase one.  I've used mine several times a day for a good while, and it is still performing flawlessly.

Nutrition:  I am assuming this is a free food when used in small amounts the same way commercial non-stick spray is used.  If you use tons of it, the calories and fat will add up.  Use your own good judgement about calorie and nutrition counts.  A very generous spray will have about 10 calories.
