Chocolate-Banana Magic Milk Shake

  • 2 ripe bananas, fresh or frozen

  • 1-1/2 cups cold water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1-1/2 cups instant nonfat dry milk powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 5-second squirt of nonstick spray OR 1/2 teaspoon liquid lecithin
  • 1 to 1-1/2 trays of ice, as much as you can spare or about 3 to 4 cups

Peel the bananas and place them in your blender.  Add the remaining ingredients including the oil, nonstick spray or lecithin and the ice.  The blender should be about 3/4's full.  Place the lid on the blender and process for a full 2 minutes.  Pour the mixture into cups and serve.  Makes about four 12-oz servings.

The oil and nonstick spray may seem odd but you do not taste them in the finished product. They add significantly to the creamy richness of this recipe.  If you do choose to leave out the oil, then still use the nonstick spray or lecithin for best results.  It makes everything blend together the way it should.  These are great for an afternoon snack for kids or adults.

For an easy variation replace the oil with 1/4-cup of natural peanut butter.  Be sure to still add the nonstick spray or lecithin so everything will be creamy.  This is my favorite way to prepare these shakes, but my boys prefer them without the peanut  butter.

Makes 4-twelve ounce serving.
